On Your Marks, Get Set...

The day was beautiful, the turnout less than expected, but those competing in the Rathdrum’s Great Adventure Race all seemed to share the common opinion: “great race, I’ll be back next year.”

Of the 60-plus registrations on the books at race
time, 37 individuals and two 3-member teams answered
the starter ’s command to: get ready, set, GO!”

Followed was a wild sprint to their waiting bicycles for the 20-some mile ride up Rathdrum Mountain and down the other side to their
waiting kayaks and a 5-mile paddle to the second transition
point.

From there, it was a 6-mile run to City Park and the cheers from a host of wellwishers. Winner Adam DeWitt, who recently moved to Coeur d’Alene from Clemson, S.C. said the “race was not too
hard, very comfortable. The 26-year-old veteran of “oh, gosh, many racesjust like this one,” negotiated the ride up the mountain
on his single-speed bicycle, while most other competitors
sported 12-or-more-speed hitech rides.

Practice paddle run

I went out over the weekend and paddled the course again. This was my second run at the new paddle leg. A couple of weeks ago I went out and GPS'ed for buoy placement ( we don't want anybody off couse). That run took me 68 minutes with four stops to mark waypoints. This past weekend I ran it a little harder and shaved it down by 7 minutes.

Just days to the starting gun

With just days to go until the race get signed up now. I took my first ride up the mountain on Friday afternoon. I must say it was work. I should give a little background. I'm 6'5" and about 260 lbs hardly your average triathalete. It took me just under two hours to get to the top of the mountain. Now I have done the paddle in just over an hour and I know I can run to town on the nice flat trail in about an hour. So I'm thinking I should be back to city park for a rather late lunch. If you're still contemplating joining us give it a try we would love to have you.
